The Chifunabuli Town Council has reportedly issued a seven-day ultimatum to bar owners at Mwewa Market in Senior Chief Mwewa’s Chiefdom to provide proper toilets and clean water at their premises or risk closure.
This was revealed during a meeting held on Wednesday between the Council’s Public Health Department and bar owners at Mwewa Secondary School, according to a statement by the Chifunabuli Town Council Public Relations Unit on Thursday.
Chifunabuli Town Council Senior Health Inspector, Mampi Mwiya, said it was unacceptable for bars and taverns to operate without basic sanitation facilities, and warned that failure to comply would result in punitive action, including closure of non-compliant businesses.

She also cautioned business owners against breaching permitted operating hours, noting that some were reportedly opening before 10:00 hours or closing after the 22:00 hours limit.
Additionally, Mwiya warned bar operators against noise pollution and the admission of underage patrons, stating that the council would not hesitate to penalise those violating regulations.
She further urged food handlers within the trading area to ensure compliance with health standards by obtaining the necessary certification before conducting any food-related business.
In response, the bar owners reportedly agreed to meet the Council’s demands and committed to improving sanitation in and around their establishments.
