The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has warned that social media was being used to spread messages that undermined national stability and democracy.
ZCTU President Blake Mulala said harmful online content directly affected communities and that citizens should not ignore it.
Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka on Friday, Mulala urged ordinary Zambians to take responsibility and report offensive posts to authorities.
He advised that citizens should not stay silent when dangerous messages were being circulated on social media but that they should report same to law enforcement organizations.

“The moment when we realise this is the message people are carrying on social media it affects citizen arresting. Call the police and say what is this one? What is he posting on social media? This is the law we must participate as citizen. Participating in our democracy,” Mulala said.
He called on citizens to use social media to promote peace and unity instead of division, stressed that participating in democracy included holding each other accountable for what is posted online to protect the country from conflict.
Mulala emphasized that political leaders were temporary, but that Zambians would always remain and must, therefore, avoid using digital platforms to spread hatred against each other.
“Let us treat one another as brothers and sisters. There must be no ew feeling against one another. Political leaders will come and go. But we the people in the nation will always remain,” he stated.
Mulala urged Zambians to reject division and to defend peace, saying social media should be used to unite the country rather than to incite conflict.
