The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) says it will engage the Registrar of Societies following concerns raised by the Patriotic Front (PF) and the National Democratic Congress over the registration of political parties and delays in updating office bearers.
The ECZ held a consultative meeting with political parties on 17 April 2026 to discuss preparations for the nomination process ahead of the 2026 general election. Parties were represented by their presidents, secretary generals or equivalents, election chairpersons and campaign managers.
ECZ Chief Electoral Officer, Brown Kasaro, said on Wednesday that several resolutions were adopted during the meeting.
“The Commission will engage the Office of the Attorney General on the requirement that a person contesting for presidential election must have been ordinarily resident in Zambia, including clarification on the period of residency required,” Kasaro said.
He added that verification of Grade 12 certificates for candidates in the 2026 polls will continue to be conducted by the Examinations Council of Zambia, either through its online platform or through physical verification.
Kasaro said political parties and independent candidates seeking pre-processing of their 100 supporters must formally notify the Commission and pay presidential nomination fees by 29 April 2026.
He added that the Commission was reviewing nomination fees for Members of Parliament, mayors, council chairpersons and councillors, and will announce its decision by 30 April 2026.
Kasaro further said it was agreed that future meetings of this nature should be by invitation only and restricted to credible political parties to prevent disruptions.
