Police in Lusaka says it recorded a fire incident at the University of Zambia (UNZA), Great East Road Campus, which occurred around 19:00 hours on July 20, 2026, in Room 18 of October 2 Hostel.
Police Spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi said the incident was reported to Handsworth Police Post under Chelstone Police Station.
Chilabi confirmed this in a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday.
Preliminary findings suggest that the fire may have originated from an electrical socket while students were using an electric cooker.
“The fire destroyed clothing, laptops, refrigerators, documents, and other personal belongings in Room 18 before spreading to the neighbouring Room 28, where additional property was also destroyed,” he said.

Chilabi said all six students occupying Rooms 18 and 28 managed to escape without sustaining any injuries, after raising an alarm and calling for help.
He said the Fire Brigade responded to the scene and successfully extinguished the fire, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the hostel.
“The total value of the damaged property has not yet been established,” Chilabi said
Police visited and processed the scene, and an inquiry file has been opened to establish the circumstances and any further details surrounding the incident.
