A 37-year-old man of Chilubi District in Northern Province has reportedly drowned while fishing on Lake Bangweulu in the early hours of Thursday.

The incident was reported by 60-year-old Albert Chisha of Munsokolwe Village, Chief Matipa’s area, who informed authorities that his younger brother, Mwila Sota, had drowned while fishing.

Northern Province Police Commanding Officer, Simunji Mulonda, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Friday.

He said the tragedy occurred on April 16, 2026, at around 05:00 hours.

According to Mulonda, the deceased had gone fishing at around 02:00 hours together with his friend, Mushili Bwalya, aged 51, of the same village.

The two were using a canoe on Lake Bangweulu when they encountered strong waves.

Mulonda explained that the waves damaged the canoe, allowing water to enter the vessel.

Despite their attempts to scoop the water out, the canoe eventually capsized.

Bwalya managed to swim to safety, but Sota failed to do so and drowned. The survivor later alerted community members, who assisted in retrieving the body from the lake.

Police visited the scene after the matter was reported and conducted a physical inspection of the body. Mulonda stated that no foul play was suspected.

The deceased’s body has since been deposited in the mortuary awaiting burial.

Mulonda advised fishermen and the general public to always prioritize safety when engaging in water activities.

He urged those who frequent water bodies to use life jackets and avoid fishing during adverse weather conditions to prevent similar tragedies.
