Forum for Democracy alleges corruption in teacher hiring following reported govt failure to beat April 3 deadline

The Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) has called on the government to provide an update on the delayed recruitment of 2,400 additional teachers promised earlier this year.

FDD Spokesperson, Anthony Chibuye, told Zambia Monitor in an interview in Lusaka on Monday that the Ministry of Education had committed to publishing the list of successful candidates by April 3, 2025, following the announcement on March 19 by Education Minister, Douglas Syakalima, that 4,200 teachers would be hired in 2025.

“The applicants and the nation expected transparency and timely communication, but instead, the UPND government has once again shown inconsistency,” Chibuye said.

He accused the government of lacking accountability in the recruitment process and alleged that corruption continues to plague teacher hiring, which he described as “chaotic and opaque.”

Chibuye further claimed that the ministry deliberately avoided advertising the latest round of recruitment, citing a backlog of existing applications — a move he said disadvantaged recent graduates and others who missed previous opportunities.

“The silence is unacceptable. We challenge President Hakainde Hichilema and his minister to explain why no update has been given on the recruitment of the 2,400 teachers,” he said.

He alleged that the FDD had received reports of bribes ranging from K15,000 to K35,000 being demanded for recruitment, likening the situation to corruption under previous administrations.

Chibuye also criticized what he called selective anti-corruption efforts, accusing the Anti-Corruption Commission of focusing on political opponents while ignoring systemic issues within the education sector.
