Four people have reportedly died, while 14 others sustained serious injuries in a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on May 22, 2025, around 13:00 hours at the Mumbwa–Zambia Air Force (ZAF) junction along the Mumbwa–Lusaka road.
The accident involved two motor vehicles—a Toyota Hiace minibus and a Volvo truck—according to a statement issued in Lusaka on Thursday by Police Assistant Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi.
The Toyota Hiace minibus, registration number BLC 3234ZM, was reportedly driven by Peter Mwenda, 34, of Garden House in Lusaka.
He was heading towards Lusaka with 16 passengers on board.
The Volvo truck, bearing registration numbers ARB 730 and BAC 5792T, was reportedly being driven by Cephas Chipika, 34, of Kafwabi Village in Mumbwa District, and was moving from east to west.
Preliminary police investigations suggest that the accident occurred when the minibus driver allegedly attempted to overtake improperly, resulting in a head-on collision with the oncoming truck.
“Due to the impact, three unidentified male passengers and one unidentified female passenger sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot,” said Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga.
