Ghana considers the autonomy plan as the only realistic and lasting basis to resolve the Sahara issue

Ghana reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s proposed autonomy plan for the Sahara, which it now considers to be the only credible and sustainable basis for achieving a mutually acceptable solution to this regional dispute.

This position is included in the joint communiqué issued at the end of the talks held Tuesday 21 July 2026 in Accra, between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans residing abroad, Nasser Bourita, and his Ghanaian counterpart, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

In this document, Accra also welcomes the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797. It reaffirms its support for the Secretary-General of the United Nations and his Personal Envoy to continue the negotiations based on the Moroccan initiative for autonomy. The objective remains to achieve a just, lasting and mutually acceptable outcome, in accordance with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.
