Google’s new report, titled “The Digital Opportunity of Sub-Saharan Africa,” reveals that the tech giant generated an estimated US$16 billion in economic activity across Sub-Saharan Africa, benefiting businesses throughout the region.
According to the report, this digital transformation equated to boosting the revenue of over one million small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), demonstrating the extensive impact of Google’s digital tools and infrastructure on economic growth.
The report also highlighted the success of the Android App Economy, which generated over US$700 million in revenue for developers across Sub-Saharan Africa in 2023.
This surge in digital revenue not only brought in substantial earnings but also supported more than 150,000 jobs while saving developers over 1.5 million workdays.
Speaking at the launch of the report, Alex Okosi, Managing Director of Google Africa, stated the vast potential for digital transformation in the region.
“The opportunities for digital transformation in Sub-Saharan Africa are immense. We’re excited to be part of this journey, driving innovation and economic growth through our investments in connectivity, skills development, and entrepreneurship. The impact we’re seeing today is just the beginning and we’re committed to helping unlock the full potential of this dynamic region.”
In 2023, Google’s suite of products and services—including Search, Ads, Google Play, YouTube, Google Cloud, and its advertising tools—contributed to the estimated US$16 billion in economic activity.
These tools empowered businesses, nonprofits, publishers, creators, and developers, driving innovation and growth across Sub-Saharan Africa.
