Group calls for concurrent NRC, voter registration drives

The Advocates for Democratic Governance Foundation (ADEG) has urged all eligible citizens to seize the opportunity to obtain their National Registration Cards (NRCs) during the ongoing mobile registration exercise across the country.

ADEG Executive Director, Gideon Musonda, said the exercise, which targets registering 3.5 million Zambians, is a crucial step towards ensuring full citizen participation in the democratic process.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday, Musonda encouraged young people who have reached the age of 18 and above to take advantage of the opportunity.

“Obtaining a National Registration Card is a fundamental requirement for registering as voters, thereby enabling citizens to exercise their right to participate in elections as both voters and candidates,” he said.

Musonda urged all eligible citizens to visit their nearest registration centre and take this important step towards exercising their civic rights.

He further called on the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to consider bringing forward the planned mass mobile voter registration exercise so it could run concurrently with the current NRC registration drive.

Musonda noted that conducting both exercises simultaneously would increase convenience for citizens, boost voter registration numbers, and reduce logistical challenges and costs.

“By conducting the exercises concurrently, the country can ensure a more streamlined process, increased efficiency, and reduced costs for citizens,” he said.
