Zambia Red Cross reportedly launches drought relief project in Gwembe

The Zambia Red Cross Society has reportedly launched an acute crisis project in Gwembe District to support vulnerable families affected by droughts linked to climate change.

Under the initiative, about 2,500 households across six wards will receive K600 in monthly cash assistance for three months to help them purchase food and meet basic needs.

Zambia Red Cross Society National President, Martin Ng’onga, announced the development in a speech read on his behalf by Social Welfare Board Member, Deborah Bwalya in Gwembe.

This is according to a statement issued on Sunday by Gwembe Public Relations Officer Coswell Hantuba.

“About 1,000 farmers have already received agricultural inputs such as 5kg of cowpeas, 5kg of maize seed, a 50kg bag of fertilizer, and 250g of okra seeds, among others,” Ng’onga said.

He added that 30 lead farmers had been trained in climate-smart agriculture to build long-term resilience against future droughts and to share knowledge within their communities.

Officiating at the event, Gwembe District Administrative Officer, Febian Habeenzu, said the project had come at a critical time, as the district faces severe hardships from the 2023/2024 El Niño-induced drought.

“The drought has disrupted livelihoods, threatened food security, and limited water availability, affecting many families,” Habeenzu said.

Meanwhile, Gwembe Town Council Secretary, Biggie Habwacha, called on the corporate sector to invest in Gwembe, highlighting the district’s untapped natural resources, including coal, lithium, and fluoride.
