Hichilema defends constitutional reforms, says amendments are best executed before elections

President Hakainde Hichilema has dismissed criticism of his administration’s proposed constitutional amendments, insisting that the timing was right arguing that the majority of Zambians want change.

Speaking at Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport in Ndola on Friday, President Hichilema said there was no such thing as “better or bad timing” when it comes to amending the Constitution.

“There is no better or bad timing for constitutional amendments. The need is driven by the will of the majority. All constitutional amendments are done before elections—check history,” he said.

The President said Zambians were calling for a refined Constitution to improve the participation of women and youth in governance.

“I was in Mansa yesterday (Thursday). Workers and employers alike supported the idea of refining the Constitution. Why should others oppose amendments that will allow more women and youths to participate in governance?” he said.

On another note, President Hichilema encouraged farmers to sell a significant portion of their produce to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) during the crop marketing season to help enhance national food security.

“I expect farmers to sell most of their produce to the FRA because that’s why we are supporting them through the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP),” he said.
