President Hakainde Hichilema has said that his administration will ensure that Zambia becomes the hub of cholera vaccine manufacturers in Africa.

Hichilema challenged Africa to wake up, especially if its primary responsibility was to solve its own problems as a continent.

He expressed government’s desire on Friday in Lusaka when he hosted a delegation from the Red Cross Society led by Dr Mohammed Omer Mukhier, Regional Director for Africa and Francson Ngosa, Zambia Red Cross Society president.

“We appreciate the role the society is playing in complementing government efforts in areas of disaster management and water supply and sanitation,” the Head of State said.

Hichilema encouraged the Red Cross Society to continue with its humanitarian role and also increase collaboration with government in disaster preparedness all the time.

He also assured the Red Cross Society of strong government partnerships especially as he was Red Cross Society Patron, saying and that they can count on him and government.

During meeting, the Red Cross Society confered Hichilema with the status of Patron and asked him to spare at least four hours of his time every year to engage in Red cross activities.

“Since the establishment of the Red Cross Society in 1966 by an Act of Parliament as a humanitarian Organisation, Zambia Red Cross Society has been acting as an auxiliary of public authority,” Ngosa said.

He stated that his organisation had been complimenting government efforts in dealing with humanitarian suffering among those least able to withstand such calamities.
