The Patriotic Front (PF) has declared a seven-day mourning period in honour of the late Sixth Republican President, Edgar Chagwa Lungu, who passed away earlier on Thursday in South Africa, where he was receiving medical treatment.

PF Acting President, Given Lubinda, made the announcement during an emotional press briefing at the party secretariat in Lusaka, which has now been designated as the official funeral gathering site for party mourners.

“We will mourn our late President Edgar Lungu for seven days. The funeral gathering for the party will be held here at the party secretariat in Lusaka, and PF offices across the country will accommodate mourners,” Lubinda said.

He urged the party’s general membership to remain calm and to honour the late President’s legacy with dignity and respect.

Fighting back tears, Lubinda added that the PF Central Committee would soon convene an urgent meeting to map the way forward during this period of national loss.

The sombre atmosphere was evident as former Cabinet Ministers, including Stephen Kampyongo (Home Affairs) and Jean Kapata (Lands), joined other senior party officials in mourning, many of whom broke down during the briefing.
