Former Edgar Lungu has urged political leaders, to emulate late First Republican President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda and other freedom fighters’ spirit to tolerate one another in diversity with respect, promote peace and unity in the country and beyond.
Lungu who currently serves as Tonse Alliance Chairperson stated that fellow politicians could do better as political leaders for the people, because posterity would only judge them based on their actions, inactions and deeds today.
In a statement shared on his Facebook page on Monday, April, 28, 2025, Lungu said Kaunda was no longer alive but that his good deeds in the past had enriched his legacy which the country continues to admire and preserve.
“Today, April 28, marks yet another milestone in Zambia’s history that reminds us of who and what our fore fathers fought for, the peace and unity that we are enjoying in Zambia, the region and the continent at large,” Lungu wrote.
He said Kaunda was a strong supporter of the liberation movements in southern Africa, including struggles against colonial rule and apartheid in neighboring countries like Zimbabwe, Namibia, South Africa, Angola, and Mozambique to name but a few.
Lungu highlighted that when Zambia gained independence in 1964, the country was a fragile mix of over 70 ethnic groupings but that Kaunda who was being celebrated today did not just fight for his fellow politicians but Zambians at large.
“Country men and women, on this Kenneth Kaunda’s Day, allow me to celebrate Dr. Kenneth David Buchizya Kaunda by reminding each and every one of us of his legacy and contribution to not only Zambia but the entire continent of Africa,” he said.
Lungu stated that Kaunda fought for the entire region as he promoted the philosophy of “One Zambia, One Nation” to overcome tribal divisions.
“Now the big question is, as we remember Dr Kaunda, are we, as a country, today reflecting his desire and aspirations? Where are we today on this matter? Let us objectively introspect and make the necessary changes, where need be, going forward,” he said,
Lungu called for unity in honour of Kaunda and every freedom fighter who shed their blood for the peace and unity the country was enjoying today.
“Tiyeni twikatane bane. We owe it to KK and every freedom fighter who shed their blood for the peace and unity we enjoy today. In KK’s voice, I say: Tiyende pamodzi ndimutima umozi,” he said.
