Manchester United beat Olympique Lyonnais 5-4 after extra time in the second leg of their UEFA Europa League quarterfinal on Thursday, sealing a 7-6 aggregate victory to reach the semifinals.

The dramatic encounter at Old Trafford saw the tie level at 2-2 following last week’s first leg in France.

Despite a strong second-half showing, United found themselves trailing 4-2 in extra time against 10-man Lyon before mounting a spirited comeback.

United, currently 14th in the English Premier League, remain 17 points above the relegation zone but are 16 points adrift of European qualification through the league.

In a match reported by Al jazeera, victory in the Europa League would guarantee a Champions League place next season.

Lyon, meanwhile, sit fourth in France’s Ligue 1 – just one point outside the automatic Champions League qualification spots.

Harry Maguire’s Reaction:“It was an incredible game, we made really hard work of it,” United defender Harry Maguire told TNT Sports.

“We had full control in the second half, had chances to score a third, then they scored out of nowhere. It put us on the back foot.

“To go down 4-2 in extra time to 10 men is not good enough, we opened ourselves up too much. But we dug in and showed great spirit – that’s what this stadium does.

“I felt like the fourth goal for them was a sucker punch, but I knew we’d get chances to get back into it. It fell to me, and thankfully I scored – it was an amazing feeling.”
