Mashombe, legendary kalindula songwriter, remembered for unique music

Legendary, founder, singer, songwriter and leader of the famous Mashombe Blue Jeans band, Nebert Mashombe remembered for reintroducing Kalindula music to Southern Province.

The singer died on Monday, January 30, 2023 after an illness and was buried on Wednesday, February 1, 2023 in Southern Province.

The late singer and songwriter who hailed from a place called Cheelo outskirt of Muzoka in Choma district of Southern province, would be remembered for his traditional musical style and for reintroducing Kalindula music to the Southern Province.

He came to the limelight of traditional Tonga music in the early 90s and his music had stood a test of time.

Mashombe last public performance was in August of 2021 at the inauguration ceremony of President Hakainde Hichilema at Heroes Stadium where.

At the inauguration ceremony, he left Lusaka residents talking with his “Welcome Ladies and Gentremen” (Gentlemen) song which he pronounced as Gentreman.

His music was mainly about family matters, bringing to light divisive issues that brought unity, and the use of locally made instruments by the band with a traditional infusion made people realize that culture is indeed dynamic.

The soft-spoken Mashombe was also a prominent figure at main public events such as the Tonga Music concert organised by Radio Chikuni, the Lwiindi Gonde ceremony, the Ngoma Music Awards, Zambia’s main music award ceremony, among others.

Mashombe released more than 10 albums with hit songs that he would live to be remembered for.
