Mungwi police probe suspected suicide incidence

Police in Northern Province say they are investigating a suspected suicide incident which occurred between the night of May13, 2026 and the morning of May 14, 2026 in Mungwi District.

Brief facts of the matter are that a 33-year-old female of Kangwa Kapombo Village, identified as Bathsheba Kafula, was reported missing after allegedly leaving home for Mungwi Town on personal business on May13, 2026.

Northern Province Deputy Commanding Officer, Dr Charles narrated in a statement on Thursday that efforts by family members and community residents to locate her proved unsuccessful until the following morning when her body was discovered in a bush area near the village hanging on a tree lifeless.

Mbita said her husband after being informed by community members rushed to the scene and confirmed the incident.

He said: “The matter was later reported to Mungwi Police Station and officers rushed to the scene of crime where upon arrival conducted a physical inspection and observed that the body was found hanging on a tree branch using a chitenge material about 20 meters from the main road, bleeding from the nose and mouth.”

He said the body was later removed and deposited at Kasama General Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem examination.

He stated that prereliminary investigations had raised concerns requiring further inquiry.

“An investigation file has since been opened to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

He added that Zambia Police Service remained concerned about the increasing number of suicide-related incidents being recorded in the province and continues to advocate for a multi-sectoral approach involving communities, religious institutions, health professionals, and other stakeholders in addressing mental health challenges and preventing loss of life.

“The public is further encouraged to seek counselling and psychosocial support whenever faced with emotional or psychological difficulties,” Mbita said.
