‘Don’t victimize,’ Chanda calls for peaceful campaigns, focus on development ahead of elections

The leader of the United Prosperous And Peaceful Zambia party, Charles Chanda, has called for peace and fair campaigning ahead of national elections on August 13.

Chanda urged all political parties to respect each other and allow voters to make their own choice freely, emphasizing that peace was the only way to build a better Zambia.

In his address to citizens and Parliamentarians as the House comes to an end today, Chanda thanked everyone from the Speaker of the National Assembly Nelly Mutti “to the last person,” and acknowledged that not everybody would have the same language.

He said the country should be able to tell the character of individuals and needs people who will put their energies to develop the country.

Chanda said the 90 days of campaigns should help the country raise a leader that would push the country’s development agenda, with rural development as the key to prosperity.

“So all the parliamentarians we wish you all the best and for those that are campaigning to come to parliament you are not coming for yourselves. You are not coming to enact laws that will disadvantage other people,” he stated.

Chanda criticized campaigns focused on jailing members of the ruling party instead of presenting a manifesto.

“Go and tell the people what you are going to do. So if you preach, if you campaign and say we are going to put those ones in prison how will that develop the nation?” he said.

He advised Zambians not to look at a candidate’s political colour, urging them to vote for those who have the right intentions for the country.

Chanda reiterated that his party remained committed to rural development, saying improving roads, clinics and schools in villages is the main focus of their campaign for the 2026 general election.

“Let this be a time of peace, let this be a time where we do not victimize each other and for those that are in authority make this to be a free and fair period for everyone to campaign and let the best person win the next elections,” Chanda emphasized.

He stressed that voters should focus on character and intentions rather than political colours, which he said change and fade.

“Think about leaders, world leaders that have come and gone. Today I may not know anything about Hitler not even the dress code of his political party but I will remember that the massacre of the six million Jews he was at the forefront,” Chanda said.

He concluded that the character of those voted for is what should matter, and urged citizens to go for people with good intentions for the country in this election.
