Zambia Police have condemned acts of violence linked to allegations of witchcraft following the murder of a 35-year-old man in Nsama District, Northern Province, and have warned members of the public against taking the law into their own hands.
Northern Province Commanding Officer, Simunji Mulonda, said in a statement issued on Friday that the murder was reported to Nsama Police Post and involved a man of Kachese Village in Nsama District.
Mulonda said preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased left his home after being approached by two unknown men who claimed they were looking to buy fish in the area.
“A short while later, he was found dead a short distance from his residence after allegedly being attacked by the two suspects, who fled the scene,” Mulonda said.
He said police had launched investigations into the matter and that efforts to trace and apprehend the suspects were ongoing.

According to Mulonda, preliminary information suggests that the killing may have been linked to allegations of witchcraft.
“The Zambia Police Service strongly condemns any form of violence arising from such allegations and wishes to remind members of the public that no individual has the right to take the law into their own hands,” he said.
Mulonda warned that anyone who engages in acts of violence, including murder, based on suspicions or allegations of witchcraft would be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law.
He urged members of the public to remain calm, refrain from spreading unverified information and report disputes or suspected criminal activities to the police instead of resorting to violence.
