Presidency accuses Zambian opposition of lacking ideas, policy alternatives ahead of 2026 polls

State House says the opposition has no clear alternative policies to those being implemented by President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND Government ahead of the August 13, 2026 general elections.

Chief Communications Specialist, Clayson Hamasaka, said there could be no election hype as long as the opposition remained without credible policy alternatives.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday, Hamasaka said Zambians were judging the election based on who had a deliverable plan, with President Hichilema and the UPND government setting the pace.

The government’s ambition, Hamasaka claimed, was clear and measurable: working toward 10 gigawatts of power generation, 10 million tonnes of maize, 5 million tourist arrivals, 3 million tonnes of copper, 3 million tonnes of soya, 1 million tonnes of wheat and US$1 billion in beef exports.

“These are not mere slogans, but a record already being delivered such as a landmark debt restructuring, inflation brought under control, a steadier kwacha, and hard-won reforms that have unlocked investment in mining, energy and agriculture,” he said.

Hamasaka added that the country was set to achieve a historical five million metric tonnes of maize harvest during the just ended farming season.

He said the opposition had not offered alternative solutions as they allegedly had no manifesto, and no position on issues that mattered to families such as free education, meal allowances, expanded bursaries, CDF, Cash-for-Work, Social Cash Transfer, or jobs.

“Equally noticeable in this campaign is the genuine peace citizens are enjoying devoid of cadreism in our bus stations and markets as citizens can now go about their business without intimidation,” Hamasaka claimed.
