A 19-year-old boy has died following a violent clash between rival gangs at Mpatamatu Cemetery in Luanshya during a grave digging on Monday.

According to Copperbelt Police Commissioner, Pathias Siandenge, the incident occurred around 11:00 hours when two rival gang groups from Mpatamatu township gathered at the cemetery to dig a grave for a deceased woman, who was a sister to one of their members.

While at the site, members of the groups allegedly began smoking cannabis, and an argument erupted after a boy from one rival gang approached the other group to ask for a share.

“This degenerated into a fight between the two rival parties whereby the deceased was beaten and rushed to Roan Antelope Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival,” Siandenge stated in a report issued on Tuesday.

Police were alerted and responded through Roan Hospital, confirming the fatality.

Siandenge said a physical inspection of the body revealed no visible injuries, and police have since opened a docket of inquiry.

No arrests had been made by press time.
