RTSA calls for caution as schools reopen for term two

The Road Transport and Safety Agency has urged all road users to exercise extra caution as schools across the country re-open for term two on Monday, May 11, 2026.

With thousands of pupils, students, and teachers expected to return to school this weekend, RTSA Head of Public Relations, Chilufya Mwewa, said there would be increased pedestrian and vehicle movement around major highways.

In a statement issued in Lusaka, Mwewa warned that this could result in carnage if adherence to road rules and regulations were overlooked.

He called on all motorists, especially public service vehicle operators, guardians and school authorities to prioritize safety during this period.

“Motorists are urged to observe stipulated speed limits, exercise maximum caution and care, and not to overload their vehicles,” Mwewa said.

She also reminded the public to avoid reckless overtaking and ensure their vehicles were roadworthy before embarking on their journey.

Mwewa cautioned Schools and bus drivers against overloading schoolchildren, allowing them to hang on moving vehicles, or picking up and dropping off learners in undesignated or unsafe areas.

“Parents and guardians are encouraged to accompany younger children to and from school where possible, or arrange for safe transport,” she stated.

Mwewa also advised educating children on basic road safety practices such as crossing at safe points and avoiding play near roads.

She said the Agency would deploy officers in identified school zones and high-traffic corridors to monitor compliance and ensure the safety of learners and other road users.

Mwewa said targeted sensitization campaigns would also be conducted in collaboration with schools and local authorities.

“Road safety remains a shared responsibility. Let us all work together to ensure that every child arrives at school and returns home safely,” she said.
