Sampa surrenders PF party leadership to ex-president Lungu after legal battles? What we know so far

In what appears to be a surrender of party leadership back to Edgar Lungu, Patriotic Front (PF) faction leader Miles Sampa has appointed Raphael Nakacinda as Secretary General, replacing Morgan Ng’ona.

In a letter dated April 30, 2025, Sampa said he had confidence in Nakacinda’s ability to execute the duties of Secretary General and called on him to unite all party structures and members—from branch to Central Committee.

While congratulating Nakacinda, who also serves as Secretary General in the Lungu-led faction, Sampa emphasised the need to unify party structures across all 10 provinces and at the national level.

“Following various consultative meetings with key people in the party and by powers currently vested in me under Article 61 of the Patriotic Front, it has become expedient that I appoint you as Secretary General of the party with immediate effect,” he stated.

Sampa added that the High Court ruling number 2025/HP/0938, issued on March 25, 2025, discharged a stay that allowed former Secretary General Ng’ona to hold on to the role.

He said that from the date of that ruling, he had effectively assumed the functions of the Secretary General’s office.
