A serious road traffic accident has resulted into  damaged part of the George Kunda Toll Gate along the Great North Road in Mkushi District, the Zambia Police has confirmed.

The incident occurred around 10:20 hours on Saturday when a truck traveling from Kapiri Mposhi towards Serenje collided with the toll gate booth.

Police spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, attributed the accident to excessive speed, which caused the driver to lose control.

The truck’s cabin and the toll gate booth were extensively damaged, although the cost of the damage to the toll plaza has yet to be determined.

According to Hamoonga, the truck was loaded with an unspecified number of fertilizer bags belonging to Arthur Logistics in Lusaka.

The cashier inside the booth, identified as Dimas Yombwe, sustained a deep cut on his head, a suspected fractured left shoulder, painful legs, and general body pains.

He was rushed to Mkushi District Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.

The truck driver, identified as Henry Musariri, escaped unhurt. Police are holding him as investigations into the accident continue.

“The Zambia Police Service wishes to remind all road users to exercise caution and observe speed limits, especially in restricted zones such as toll gates,” Hamoonga said in a statement.

He emphasized that excessive speed poses a danger not only to drivers but also to other road users and public infrastructure. The public is encouraged to report incidents of reckless driving to the nearest police station or traffic officers on duty.
