Police in Chongwe are investigating a suspected gassing incident at Matipula Secondary School that left 13 female pupils needing hospital treatment on Thursday morning, officials have said.

Police Spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi said the incident happened between 09:30 and 10:00 hours on May 22, 2026, at the school in Chongwe District and that the report was made by a 43-year-old male teacher acting on behalf of the school administration.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Saturday, Chilabi said two male pupils aged 17 and 18 were alleged to have sprayed a suspected noxious gas substance into a classroom while other pupils were present.

The matter came to light when two female pupils exited the classroom and collapsed shortly afterwards and a third female pupil also collapsed soon after.

“Teachers responded immediately and evacuated all pupils from the classroom after confirming a suspected gassing incident,” Chilabi said.

Further investigations are said to have led police to identify and apprehend the two male pupils, who are now in custody assisting with inquiries.

A third male pupil, suspected of supplying the substance used in the incident, reportedly left the school premises after it occurred and efforts are said to be underway to locate and apprehend him.

“A total of 13 female pupils were affected and taken to Chongwe District Hospital. Eight have since been discharged after treatment, while five remain admitted. All admitted pupils are in stable condition and out of danger,” Chilabi said.

Officers who processed the scene recovered a bottle suspected to contain the substance and has been secured as an exhibit pending forensic examination.

An inquiry file has been opened and investigations are ongoing.

“The situation is under control and that further updates will be provided in due course,” Chilabi assured.
