Work begins on Dangote’s $16bn Kenya refinery

Nigerian billionaire, Aliko Dangote’s planned $16 billion oil refinery in Kenya, has kicked off, marking a major milestone as work begins on what is expected to become the world’s largest single-train refinery.

Honeywell Technologies announced on September 30 that Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE had selected the company to provide process technologies, licensing, engineering services, proprietary catalysts, specialised equipment and digital solutions for the planned 700,000-barrel-per-day refinery in Lamu County.

According to Billionaires Africa, the contract is valued at about $300 million and forms a key part of the ambitious refinery project.

The announcement coincided with the official groundbreaking ceremony presided over by Dangote and Kenyan President William Ruto.

The $16 billion refinery will produce diesel, petrol and jet fuel for Kenya and the wider East African market.

The partnership builds on Honeywell’s previous work at Dangote’s refinery in Lekki, Lagos, with the Kenyan project expected to benefit from engineering designs already developed for the Nigerian facility.

Honeywell said using the existing refinery designs could shorten the construction schedule by almost two years, representing about a 30 percent reduction compared with the development timeline for a new refinery.

Dangote said the partnership would help accelerate the project while strengthening Africa’s energy security.

The Kenyan project further expands Dangote’s refining business beyond Nigeria, where his Lagos refinery currently has a nameplate capacity of 650,000 barrels per day.

The Kenyan refinery is expected to be completed in 2030 and will play a key role in boosting regional fuel security and supporting economic growth across East Africa.
