Zambia on Thursday launched an electronic system for clearing food imports, exports and transit goods, replacing manual procedures with a centralized digital platform aimed at improving efficiency and transparency, the health ministry said.

Health Minister, Alex Katakwe, said the new Electronic Clearance Certification, hosted on the Government Service Bus, was part of efforts to modernise public service delivery and reduce the cost of doing business.

“This launch represents more than the introduction of a new system. It marks a meaningful step forward in how the Government delivers services to our people and to the business community,” Katakwe said at the event in Lusaka.

He said reliable and safe food systems reduce disease burdens, boost consumer confidence and support national productivity, adding that digital regulatory tools would allow authorities to enforce standards more consistently and respond faster to emerging risks.

Katakwe said simplifying procedures and improving turnaround times would help businesses operate more competitively, while enhancing accountability across institutions.

He urged private sector players to adopt the platform and called on public officers to uphold professionalism as the government expands digital transformation across agencies.
