Zambia signs 5 years deal with Egypt to grow ICT sector

The Zambian government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Arab Republic of Egypt on cooperation in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector.

Zambia was represented by its  Technology and Science Minister Felix Mutati while Egypt was represented by the Communications and Information Technology Minister Amr Talaat.

The MoU was signed on Wednesday in Egypt.

In updating Zambia on the developments in the ICT sector, Mutati said the MoU signed would therefore be valid for a period of five years and may be renewed by any of the two parties.

“With recognition of the special relations, historical ties and cultural links of the two countries, hence the desire to enhance and strengthen bilateral cooperation in the fields of communication and information technology as an enabler for the diverse sectors of the economies,” Mutati said.

He explained that the purpose of the MoU was to enhance cooperation between both parties in ICT and Postal Services sector to achieve mutual benefits.

Further, he said, the MoU provided for protection of Intellectual Property Rights in accordance with the laws, rules and regulations of each party and international agreements binding on both parties.

“Our key areas of cooperation under this agreement are; Digital Transformation Scope, Postal Services Scope, Institutional Capacity Building, Human Capacity Building and skills development, Artificial Intelligence, e-learning, digital inclusion and international infrastructure,” Mutati said.
