President Hakainde Hichilema has retained Mutale Nalumango as Vice President of the ruling United Party for National Development following the party’s General Assembly held last week, according to a letter released on Tuesday.

In a letter dated April 21 and signed by Hichilema, Nalumango was reappointed under Article 56(4) of the UPND constitution. “You are hereby appointed to the position of Vice President of the party,” the letter stated.

Hichilema said he was confident Nalumango would continue to serve both the party and the country diligently.

“On behalf of the party, I wish to congratulate you for this well-deserved appointment,” he wrote.

Political analysts said the reappointment signals continuity within the UPND leadership as it prepares for upcoming general elections.

In a separate development, the opposition People’s Pact led by Fred M’membe has named Dolika Banda, niece of former president Rupiah Banda, as its presidential running mate ahead of the August 13 general election.

M’membe said the decision followed an extensive vetting process, noting that Zambia’s future depended on strong and credible leadership.

“The future of this country will depend on the leadership we construct and the national purpose we set,” he said.

He added that the selection of a running mate was a weighty responsibility. “If we do not have leaders people can look up to, forget it. Like our past, the future will depend on the leadership we build,” M’membe said.
