The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) on Monday, June 1, 2025, held a stakeholder engagement meeting with traditional leaders in Lumezi District, Eastern Province, in preparation for the Constituency by-election scheduled for June 26, 2025.
The meeting aimed to underscored the vital role traditional leaders play in fostering peace and promoting a credible electoral process.
Speaking during the meeting, ECZ Commissioner Major General, Vincent Mukanda (Rtd), said the Commission deliberately sought engagement with traditional authorities and other stakeholders to promote peaceful participation in the upcoming polls.
He emphasized that traditional leaders were instrumental in maintaining the peace enjoyed by residents of Lumezi and urged them to shield their communities from external interference.

“Traditional leaders should protect their communities and ensure that individuals are not subjected to intimidation, threats, coercion, or used as tools of violence,” Mukanda said.
Representing the six chiefs of Lumezi, Chief Chikomeni reiterated the traditional leadership’s commitment to resolving misunderstandings peacefully.
“The chiefs will not protect any individual found violating the law during the campaigns for the upcoming Lumezi parliamentary by-election,” he said.
