Citizens First (CF) has withdrawn from the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA), with party president Harry Kalaba citing the need to focus on internal mobilisation and build a broader coalition against what he termed President Hakainde Hichilema’s “tyrannical rule.”
Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka on Wednesday, Kalaba said CF’s decision also stems from a desire to work more freely with like-minded stakeholders in pursuit of a united and prosperous Zambia.
“We regret to announce that Citizens First is, effective today, disengaging from the United Kwacha Alliance. We wish to thank SC Sakwiba Sikota for allowing us to be part of this progressive and dynamic team,” Kalaba stated.
He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to a united opposition, stressing the need to liberate Zambians from what he described as a repressive regime under the UPND government.
Kalaba accused the ruling party of stifling democracy and undermining the hard-won freedoms of association and expression.
He warned that Zambia was facing an existential crisis, not due to a lack of resources, but because of what he called “poor and inept leadership.”
“Our country cannot afford another five years under this kind of bankrupt leadership,” Kalaba said.
He called on opposition parties, civil society organisations, the clergy, trade unions, student bodies, and ordinary citizens to unite in addressing the leadership and identity crisis affecting the nation.

Kalaba stressed that the development of Zambia lies in the hands of its people, not foreign interests.
“The CF is calling on all stakeholders to come together, not just with the motive of removing President Hichilema, but to find effective solutions that will empower Zambians to drive the national transformation agenda,” he said.
Kalaba reiterated the party’s commitment to contributing toward achieving Zambia’s Vision 2030 of becoming a prosperous middle-income country, arguing that the current administration’s priorities undermine that goal.
“While the country faces numerous challenges under the outgoing UPND government, we are ready to present viable solutions that the CF will implement once elected into office,” Kalaba said.
