The Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) has condemned the reported abduction and destruction of property belonging to the Leadership Movement (LM) candidate for the Manguza Ward by-election in Mbabala Constituency, Southern Province.

FDD is also calling on the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to disqualify the United Party for National Development (UPND) candidates in both Manguza and Kimasala Wards for their alleged involvement in acts of electoral violence.

In a statement issued in Lusaka, FDD spokesperson, Anthony Chibuye, described the incidents allegedly perpetrated by UPND cadres as “barbaric and primitive.”

“Therefore, as FDD, we challenge President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND to stop practicing dirty politics. We know you are aware that defeat is near,” Chibuye said.

He urged President Hichilema to use the remaining 12 months of his term to guarantee the safety of all citizens.

On July 8, 2025, Zambia Monitor reported that LM President Dr. Richard Silumbe had alleged UPND cadres abducted the party’s Manguza Ward candidate and vandalised his home, looting livestock and property including goats, pigs, and chickens.

“Now the UPND wants to go unopposed in Southern Province. They don’t want any political party in this area. They abducted our candidate during nominations; after that, they destroyed his house and looted everything — goats, pigs, chickens, etc.,” Silumbe had said.

He appealed to both the ECZ and Zambia Police to take decisive action and uphold the principles of democracy in the ongoing by-election process.
