President Hakainde Hichilema has addressed the nation for the first time since the demise of former President Edgar Lungu last week calling for peace and unity in the country during the mourning period.
In a brief national address on Thursday night, President Hichilema highlighted the need for peace and unity.
“It is now a week since the demise of the 6th President Edgar Lungu, I am calling for peace and unity at this moment, no political rivalry
no political rivalry,” he said.
President Hichilema discouraged citizenry not to allow anger rule as they mourn the departed Head of State but embrace understanding and restraint.
“I urge the United Party for National Development (UPND) and other political parties to mourn the 6th President with dignity and avoid exploiting pain for political gain,” he said.
President Hichilema added he would not allow anarchy but ensure that there was rule of law and he urged Zambians to pray for peace and that unity.
“My duty is serve all citizens and now is the time to rise above division and show the world our unshakeable beliefs as we bid farewell to the departed and uphold the dignity that befits the office he once held,” he said.
Former President Lungu died in South Africa on Thursday last week after an illness.
Since then, the family and the government has been locked in negotiations regarding the repatriation of the remains as the parties reaches stalement.
