‘Inhuman, senseless,’ Musonda condemns calls to expel late Lungu’s daughter from Parliament

Social critic, James Musonda, has described as inhuman and shameless the calls by the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) to expel Chawama Member of Parliament, Tasila Lungu, from the National Assembly.

His reaction follows a point of order raised on Tuesday by Zambezi East MP, Brian  Kambita, who asked Speaker of the National Assembly Nelly Mutti to consider declaring Tasila Lungu’s seat vacant due to her prolonged absence from parliamentary proceedings.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Musonda questioned the motive behind the demand, especially at a time when the Lungu family was mourning the late former President, Edgar Lungu.

“What kind of hatred is this?” Musonda asked. “You drag a poor widow and her children to court, leaving Lungu’s body in the fridge for over a month, and in the midst of that, you want his daughter expelled from Parliament. This is not the Zambia we know,” he said.

Musonda accused the UPND of undermining the country’s moral fabric and urged the party to cease what he termed unnecessary and illogical actions.

Tasila Lungu is the daughter of the late Sixth Republican President Edgar Lungu, who died in South Africa on June 5, 2025.

However, his body remains unburied due to an ongoing court case in which Attorney-General Mulilo Kabesha is demanding the repatriation of the former president’s remains to Zambia for what the state describes as a “dignified” burial.

Musonda said that pursuing legal battles against a grieving family, while simultaneously seeking to exclude its members from political participation, goes against the values of compassion and unity that Zambia stood for.
