The Medical for Quality Healthcare in Zambia (MQHZ) has urged the government to prioritize policies that promote women’s leadership in the health sector, noting that women made up more than 70 percent of the healthcare workforce but remained underrepresented in decision-making roles.
MQHZ Director General, Dr. Quincy Mwabu, said addressing this disparity was essential to unlocking the full potential of the healthcare system.
“The persistent gender gap in leadership roles not only limits the sector’s potential for excellence but also deprives it of the diverse perspectives, skills, and experiences that women leaders bring to the table,” Mwabu stated in Lusaka on Sunday.
He emphasized that empowering women to take on leadership roles could improve healthcare delivery, strengthen gender-sensitive policies, and create a more inclusive workforce.
Dr. Mwabu urged Health Minister Dr. Elijah Muchima to act swiftly, stressing that tapping into the vast pool of talented women professionals would spur innovation and improve patient outcomes.
He also noted that women leaders brought unique perspectives, foster collaboration, and promote transparency and accountability—values that could reduce corruption and improve resource management in the health sector.
“By promoting women’s leadership, Zambia can create a more transparent, accountable, and corruption-free health sector that serves the needs of all citizens,” he said.
Mwabu added that reforms such as merit-based appointments and promotions, ethical leadership practices, and improved resource management were crucial to achieving this vision.
He underscored that enhancing women’s participation in leadership was vital for building a resilient healthcare system capable of delivering quality services with integrity and compassion.
