EIZ unveils engineering fund to boost innovation, skills, economic transformation

The Engineering Institute of Zambia (EIZ) has launched an engineering fund aimed at empowering professionals to develop and implement solutions that contribute to national development and economic growth.

The initiative is part of EIZ’s broader mission to foster innovation, promote research, and translate engineering expertise into practical applications that address pressing national challenges such as the energy crisis and climate change.

Speaking during the launch on Friday in Lusaka, EIZ president Wesley Kaluba said Zambia had abundant engineering talent that was often underutilised in driving economic transformation.

“The fund is more than a financial mechanism. It is a declaration of intent, a pledge of commitment, and a legacy in the making. This is not just about money collected or loans given, but about trust, integrity, and ensuring that every kwacha invested achieves its purpose,” Kaluba said.

He urged both students and professionals to treat the opportunity with the highest sense of responsibility.

Engineering Fund Chairperson Bernard Chiwala described the facility as a strategic initiative designed to support the professional and economic growth of members while also providing grants to engineering students for knowledge acquisition and product development.

He said the fund would further offer project and industrial development loans tailored to the needs of EIZ members.

“Governance of the fund will be overseen by a committee of the EIZ Council, working with a selected fund manager to ensure robust management, accountability, and alignment with the fund’s objectives,” Chiwala explained.

Zambia Industrial Commercial Bank (ZICB) Chief Retail Banking Officer Chibotu Chiyasa welcomed the initiative, noting that it comes at a critical time as Zambia advances its industrialisation and commercialisation agenda.

“By supporting research, product development, and industrial projects, this fund will directly contribute to the pillars of our economic transformation. We urge beneficiaries to create home-grown engineering solutions that drive value addition to Zambia’s natural resources,” Chiyasa said.
