The Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) has seized 69 boxes of used underwear in Rufunsa District during an enforcement operation.
ZCSA Manager for Communications and Public Relations, Brian Hatyoka, said the confiscated consignment was part of used textile products recently donated to a named faith-based organisation in the district.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday, Hatyoka said the seizure was in line with the provisions of the Zambian Standard (ZS) 559: Inspection and Acceptance Criteria for Used Textile Products.
He explained that the Agency confiscated the items on October 9, 2025, pending disposal as required under the Compulsory Standards Act No. 3 of 2017.
Hatyoka cautioned importers and recipients of donated used textiles to refrain from bringing in consignments that include undergarments such as pyjamas, bras, tights, camisoles, nightgowns, and vests, saying such products pose health risks to consumers.
He stressed that the Zambian standard for used textile products prohibits the importation and sale of used clothing containing undergarments.

“This standard was declared compulsory to protect the health of consumers because used textile products that are worn in very close contact with the skin may cause ailments such as skin rash, fungal infections and sexually transmitted infections, among other ailments,” Hatyoka stated.
He urged members of the public to report any banned products found on the market to the nearest ZCSA office.
Hatyoka reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to protecting consumers from potential health risks linked to used undergarments and other non-compliant products.
He further announced that ZCSA would conduct a sensitisation roadshow at Maramba Market in Livingstone to educate traders on the dangers of used undergarments and unregulated potable spirits.
Hatyoka appealed to residents of Livingstone to attend the event in large numbers to gain vital information aimed at safeguarding public health.
ZCSA is mandated under the Compulsory Standards Act No. 3 of 2017 to ensure compliance with compulsory standards for public safety, consumer health, and environmental protection.
