Government has reaffirmed that the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) remained one of Zambia’s most significant trading partners, with exports surpassing USD 1.2 billion in 2024.

Speaking during the official opening of the Zambia Outward Trade Mission to the DRC, Permanent Secretary for Commerce and Trade in the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry, Lillian Bwalya, underscored the importance of deepening economic and diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Her remarks were delivered on her behalf by the Zambia Development Agency (ZDA) Director General, Albert Halwampa.

“This mission is more than a platform for business transactions; it is a bridge to strengthen the enduring partnership between Zambia and the DRC,” Bwalya said, adding, “The Government of Zambia remains committed to facilitating trade by reducing barriers, improving infrastructure, and enhancing regional cooperation through mechanisms such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).”

She further highlighted the strategic importance of the Lobito Corridor, urging Zambian and Congolese businesses to form joint ventures and partnerships aligned with this vital trade route, which connects to wider regional markets.

Bwalya encouraged Zambian entrepreneurs to continue engaging the DRC market, remarking, “We must never tire of fishing in the DRC market.”

The trade mission, she announced, will extend to Kolwezi and Kisangani to broaden opportunities for business engagement and cross-border collaboration.

Meanwhile, Zambia’s Consul General accredited to the DRC, Steward Nchimunya, expressed satisfaction with the strong diplomatic ties between the two countries, which he said are founded on shared values and mutual aspirations.

“I am confident that this trade mission will foster closer relations between our business communities, create new growth opportunities, and contribute to the prosperity of both nations,” Nchimunya stated.

Also speaking during the event, Erick Kadima, President of the Legal Commission of the Fédération des Entreprises du Congo (FEC), described the trade mission as a strategic vehicle for strengthening bilateral cooperation.

He noted that both governments have intensified efforts through agreements and high-level engagements to streamline traffic and establish one-stop border posts aimed at reducing transit times and costs.
