Patriotic Front (PF) Mporokoso Member of Parliament Brian Mundubile has been elected Tonse Alliance Chairperson and presidential candidate for the 2026 general election after defeating Christian Democratic Party leader Dr. Danny Pule in a decisive vote.
The election, held on January 28, 2026, saw Mundubile secure 129 votes against Pule’s 34, placing him at the centre of a restructured opposition formation as Zambia approaches the August 13, 2026 polls, where President Hakainde Hichilema is seeking a fresh mandate.
With the PF still immobilised by court injunctions and ongoing internal disputes, the Tonse Alliance has emerged as an alternative political vehicle for Mundubile at a time when his own party’s future remains clouded by legal and organisational uncertainty.
In his remarks after being elected, Mundubile expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in him and pledged to strengthen the alliance and position it for victory in the upcoming general election.
He described the mandate as a major responsibility and said he was deeply humbled to lead a coalition that seeks to offer renewed political direction.
Mundubile’s election comes against the backdrop of a significant High Court ruling that continues to restrict the operations of the PF faction led by Given Lubinda.
On January 27, 2026, Kabwe High Court Judge Kelvin Hancubwili Limbani upheld an injunction restraining the Lubinda-led group from holding a General Conference, occupying the PF Secretariat, using party materials or symbols, or convening meetings in the name of the party until the main matter is conclusively heard.
The injunction was granted in favour of the faction aligned with Maginga Constituency MP Robert Chabinga, which sued through Morgan Ngona in his capacity as a member and Secretary General of the PF.
Justice Limbani ruled that the plaintiffs had demonstrated a clear right to the relief sought and that the matter raised serious issues requiring full judicial determination.
He further stated that the balance of convenience lay in granting the injunction to prevent potential disruption and confusion that could arise from competing claims to party leadership.
The present matter traces back to an earlier ex-parte injunction issued in November 2025, which had already curtailed the activities of the Lubinda and Miles Sampa-aligned group, preventing them from organising a General Conference or assuming control over party infrastructure.
The case has now been set down for a full trial, where the question of legitimate PF leadership will be adjudicated.
