Belgium has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara under the Kingdom’s sovereignty, describing it as “the most serious, credible and realistic basis” for achieving a just and lasting political solution to the regional dispute.
The Moroccan Foreign Ministry said on Monday 02 March 2026 that the Belgian position was conveyed by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs, and Foreign Trade of Belgium, Maxime Prévot, during his meeting in Rabat with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.

According to the statement, Prévot affirmed that Belgium’s stance on the Sahara aligns with the Joint Declaration signed in Brussels on October 23, 2025, recognizing the region’s vital importance to Morocco and firmly placing it within the framework of the Kingdom’s sovereignty and national unity.
“The Belgian Foreign Minister also stressed that he intends to act accordingly on diplomatic and economic levels, and that Belgium’s position aligns with international law. He reiterated that the Belgian Ambassador in Rabat will soon visit the Sahara to prepare and support several economic initiatives, including Belgian company visits and trade fairs organized by the three regional agencies,” the statement said.
Regarding consular matters, Belgium emphasized that its Consulate General in Rabat covers all Belgian nationals across Morocco, including the Sahara region.
The ministry noted that Prévot’s visit reflects a positive momentum in Morocco-Belgium relations, marked by regular political dialogue and a shared ambition to deepen a strategic partnership based on mutual respect and convergence on issues of common interest.
Both countries also expressed readiness to advance collaboration in political dialogue, economic cooperation, and consultation on regional and international matters, while encouraging investment in high-value sectors such as energy transition, sustainable infrastructure, green economy, and industrial innovation.
