Eight killed in 44 road accidents during Zambia’s Youth Day holiday

The Zambia Police Service recorded 44 road traffic accidents across the country during the Youth Day holiday on March 12, 2026, with Lusaka Province recording the highest number, police said.

Police spokesperson, Godfrey Chilabi, confirmed the incidents in a statement issued in Lusaka on Friday.

Of the total accidents, eight were fatal, resulting in eight deaths. Seven were serious injury accidents in which seven people sustained serious injuries, while nine resulted in minor injuries.

The remaining 20 accidents involved property damage only.

According to the provincial distribution, Lusaka Province recorded 22 accidents, the highest in the country.

Central Province reported 10 accidents, followed by Southern Province with four, Copperbelt Province with three, and North-Western Province and Muchinga Province with two each.

Luapula Province recorded one accident.

Northern Province, Eastern Province and Western Province recorded no accidents.

“The Zambia Police Service urges all motorists and other road users to strictly follow road traffic rules and regulations to prevent accidents, protect lives and ensure safety on our roads,” Chilabi said.
