Zambia strengthens measurement systems to boost industrialization drive

Government has reaffirmed that Zambia’s industrialisation drive would only succeed if supported by credible measurement systems, quality assurance mechanisms and effective regulatory standards.

Speaking during the commemoration of World Metrology Day in Lusaka on Wednesday, Special Advisor to the President for Finance and Investment, Jito Kayumba, said metrology, the science of measurement, played a vital role in national development and economic governance.

Kayumba said although metrology often operated behind the scenes, it remained central to nearly every productive sector of the economy.

He said Zambia remained committed to driving economic transformation through industrialisation, increased productivity, value addition and export diversification.

Meanwhile, Zambia Metrology Agency (ZMA) Executive Director, Humphrey Nkobeni, described metrology as the “invisible force” behind industrialisation and modern civilisation.

He said trusted measurements were essential in sectors such as mining, medicine, aviation, agriculture, infrastructure, energy and international trade.

Speaking at the same event, International Organization of Legal Metrology Deputy Director, Ian Dunmill, said this year’s theme highlighted the importance of legal metrology in promoting fairness and confidence in trade and regulation.

ZMA Board Chairperson, Musamala Nyirongo, said industrialisation could not be achieved without accurate, reliable and internationally recognised measurements.
