Mazabuka: Ex-UPND, now independent candidate, Nkombo condemns plot to stop his political ambition

Independent candidate for Mazabuka Central Constituency, Gary Nkombo, has strongly condemned acts of violence and intimidation he was subjected to while filing his nomination papers.

The incident occurred May 20, 2026 during the nomination process as the immediate past Mazabuka Central Constituency lawmaker went to file in his nomination to contest as an Independent candidate.

In a statement issued in Mazabuka on Wednesday, Nkombo stated that what should have been a peaceful and democratic process was marred by aggression from individuals seeking to undermine constitutional rights.

He said the conduct threatened the peace and unity that the people of Mazabuka and Zambia deserved.

“What should have been a peaceful and democratic process was unfortunately marred by acts of aggression from individuals determined to undermine the constitutional rights of citizens to freely participate in the democratic process,” he said.

Nkombo who was until the disolution of Parliament, the UPND Mazabuka lawmaker said such conduct had no place in Zambia’s democracy and called on all political players, supporters, and stakeholders to exercise restraint.

He urged stakeholders to uphold the rule of law and respect democratic freedoms regardless of political affiliation.

Nkombo further called on the Zambia Police Service to act professionally, impartially, and decisively in investigating the matter.

“Elections must never become a source of violence, fear, or division among our people. The police to ensure that all perpetrators are brought to book,” he stated.

He said the people of Mazabuka Central deserved assurance that law and order would prevail, emphasizing that every candidate should be able to campaign freely and safely without intimidation.

“As an independent candidate, I remain committed to peaceful engagement, issue-based politics, and serving the interests of the people of Mazabuka Central with dignity, integrity, and respect for democratic values,” Nkombo said.

He urged his supporters to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding during this period.

Nkombo concluded by saying, “May peace, justice, and democracy prevail.”

Earlier, President Hakainde Hichilema directed law enforcement agencies to arrest all perpetrators of violence in Mazabuka following an attack on Nkombo by alleged UPND cadres as he went to file as an independent lawmaker.

The President reiterated that electoral lawlessness would not be tolerated and that all those responsible would face the full force of the law regardless of political affiliation or social standing.

President Hichilema stated that his position on maintaining law and order during the nomination period remained firm and unchanged.
