US President Donald Trump has reaffirmed the United States’ recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara in a message addressed to the King of Morocco, Mohammed VI, on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of Throne Day.
According to a statement issued by the Royal Cabinet on the Saturday 01 August 2026, Trump stressed that the United States recognizes Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and supports Morocco’s serious, credible, and realistic autonomy proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the regional dispute.
Any other approach would only prolong the current situation, which is unacceptable, added the US president, vowing that Washington will continue working to advance efforts aimed at bringing the dispute to an end.
Trump also congratulated King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan people on the 27th anniversary of Throne Day, praising the longstanding ties between the two countries. Morocco and the United States are marking 250 years of American history and enduring friendship with Morocco, he noted, describing the bilateral relationship as one built on trust and mutual respect.
Highlighting political and security cooperation, Trump praised Morocco’s role in promoting regional stability, saying King Mohammed VI’s leadership has been a cornerstone of stability. He also commended the Kingdom’s commitment to peace, countering extremism, and protecting the security of both Americans and Moroccans.
The American president further underscored Morocco’s role within the Abraham Accords and reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to continued cooperation with Rabat to strengthen security across the Sahel region.
On the economic front, Trump said King Mohammed VI’s vision for growth creates new opportunities for prosperity for both countries and their economies. He revealed that he had tasked US teams with advancing economic and social development initiatives with Morocco, including in the Sahara region.
The US president also said American technology and innovation would continue supporting Morocco’s development projects in the years ahead, with a focus on strategic sectors such as energy, artificial intelligence, rare earth minerals, and defense as part of expanding bilateral economic and investment cooperation.
Trump concluded by expressing his expectation for a new phase in US-Morocco relations. Together, we will build a new era that puts the interests of our peoples first, he pledged, reaffirming both countries’ intention to deepen their political, economic, and security partnership, according to the Royal Cabinet.
