Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) president, Kasonde Mwenda, has claimed that the treason case involving former NRP presidential candidate Brian Mundubile, his running mate Makebi Zulu and 17 others has not yet been registered before the Lusaka High Court, more than a month after their detention.
Mwenda said an inspection of the General and Criminal Registries of the Lusaka High Court on Monday found no record of the alleged treason case, despite the suspects having been transferred to Mukobeko Maximum Prison in Kabwe.
In a statement issued in Lusaka, Mwenda questioned why the State had detained the suspects before completing investigations, arguing that the delay raised questions about the evidence against them and the use of state power.
He also claimed that the alleged sedition charge against the accused was not reflected in the court record, while the suspects remained in detention.

“Our inspection of the Lusaka High Court today, both General and Criminal Registries, confirmed that the alleged Mundubile and 18 others treason case is still not before court more than a month after detention and subsequent transfer of suspects to Kabwe’s Mukobeko Maximum Prison,” Mwenda said.
Mwenda described the continued detention without trial as unfair, illegal and retributive, comparing it with the earlier detention of 42 NRP members.
“Holding citizens in long detention is unfair and illegal. We demand that the State take the matter to court and stop this abuse or immediately release them. Let justice prevail,” he said.
Mundubile, Zulu and the other accused remain in custody as the State’s alleged treason case has yet to be formally heard, according to Mwenda.
