Chitambo MP to pay K1.3 million compensation in fatal Yango driver crash settlement

Chitambo Member of Parliament, Remember Mutale, has agreed to compensate the family of the late Yango driver, Joseph Kaumba Yikona, with K1.3 million following a fatal road accident that claimed the young man’s life.

The development followed a consent judgment signed before Judge Elita Mwikisa on May 20, 2025, bringing to a close an emotional legal battle between the MP and Yikona’s family.

According to the court-sanctioned agreement, Mutale will make an initial payment of K150,000 within three days of the judgment, followed by monthly installments of K3,000 until May 2026.

The remaining balance must be fully settled by May 31, 2026.

The consent order further states that any default on monthly payments would trigger an immediate demand for the entire outstanding balance.

The K1.3 million settlement was declared a full and final resolution of the matter, with the plaintiff’s legal team waiving any claim for legal costs.

Despite agreeing to the terms, Mutale strongly denied responsibility for the accident. He contested the Yikona family’s initial K3.7 million claim, insisting he was not at fault for the crash.

In court filings submitted by his legal team, Messrs Nchito & Nchito, Mutale argued that Yikona, who was riding a motorcycle without a valid license, collided with his vehicle.

The incident occurred on the night of March 29, 2024, between 22:30 and 23:30 hours, at the junction of Katima Mulilo Road and the turnoff to Cross Roads Lodge in Lusaka.

The plaintiff, Elizabeth Pezo Kanoka, representing Yikona’s family, alleged that the MP fled the scene, leaving the injured Yango driver behind. Yikona was later rushed to the hospital by a good Samaritan but succumbed to his injuries.

Kanoka also told the court that Yikona had been the sole breadwinner for his young family, which included two children — one aged four and the other just three months old — and earned a monthly income of K2,710 as a Yango driver and mechanic.

Mutale, however, maintained in his defense that he did not flee the scene and only realized something had occurred after hearing a sudden bang on the left side of his vehicle.
