“We are ready to hunt!” — That’s the rallying cry from Copper Queens Head Coach, Nora Häuptle, as Zambia gears up for their opening clash against hosts Morocco in the 2024 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

With just seven days remaining before the prestigious tournament kicks off, Häuptle delivered a bold and confident message from Morocco, where the Zambian women’s national team is now fully assembled after overcoming initial travel delays.

“We had our second session here with the full squad on Friday. The mood is excellent,” Häuptle said. “We’ve struck a good balance between maintaining high spirits and working hard.”

Zambia will open their campaign against the host nation in what is expected to be a highly competitive Group A, which also included Senegal and Uganda.

While Morocco boasts a technically gifted team, Häuptle is approaching the match with determination and tactical focus.

“We are ready to hunt against Morocco,” she declared, adding “They have technically gifted players, and we are well aware of their strengths. But we intend to challenge them, find the right strategy, and go at them with purpose.”

Beyond physical training, the Copper Queens have also held team-building sessions to define their values and identity on the pitch.

“We had a meaningful discussion yesterday about the values we want to uphold, how we wish to be recognised, and the culture we aim to project,” Häuptle shared.

Credited with instilling discipline and confidence in the squad, the Swiss tactician called on Zambians everywhere to stand behind the team.

“We hope many fans can make it to Morocco to support us in person. And for those who can’t, we ask that you cheer for us from your homes and keep us in your hearts,” she said.

She added, “We need the entire nation behind us as we navigate this group stage.”
