Lusaka Magistrate, Mbuywana Sinvula, has postponed to July 25, 2025, the case in which former First Lady Esther Lungu is facing charges of theft, after the court was informed she remained in mourning following the death of her husband, former President Edgar Lungu.
The former First Lady is currently in South Africa with her family and has yet to bury the late Sixth Republican President, who died earlier this month.
Her legal team requested a deferral of the proceedings, citing her unavailability due to ongoing funeral arrangements.
Esther Lungu is jointly charged with police officers James Phiri and Lee Chisulo, as well as Kapambwe Lungu and Catherine Banda. The five are accused of stealing three motor vehicles and a certificate of title for a house located in Lusaka’s Libala township.
When the matter came up in chambers, defence lawyer Charles Changano told Magistrate Sinvula that Mrs. Lungu was unable to attend due to the family tragedy.
The State did not oppose the application.
