Mines and Minerals Development Minister, Paul Kabuswe, has confirmed that all illegal miners operating at Konkola Copper Mines’ (KCM), Nchanga Mine in Chingola have been ordered to vacate the site, with security forces deployed to enforce the directive and restore order.
In a statement issued by Ministry spokesperson, Shamwinda Tembo, Kabuswe emphasized government’s zero-tolerance policy on illegal mining activities, adding that the action was taken last Saturday in response to growing concerns over unregulated operations at the mine.
“The Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development remains steadfast in fostering a well-regulated mining sector that prioritises safety, environmental protection, and sustainable development,” Kabuswe stated.
In a related development, the Minister reiterated government’s commitment to ending illegal mining at Senseli Mine in Chingola, stressing that all mining activities there must be regularised and brought into compliance with national regulations.

He dismissed reports that the Ministry had sanctioned operations at Senseli Mine, clarifying that the site remained under private control and has not been formally authorised by government.
“We are in discussions with the owners of Senseli Mine to formalise their operations, guaranteeing compliance with safety, environmental, and legal standards,” Kabuswe said.
He further noted that security agencies were actively supporting the process of regularisation at the site, working to ensure order and adherence to legal procedures.
The Minister also addressed concerns surrounding a recent visit by Chingola Member of Parliament, Chipoka Mulenga, to the mine, clarifying that the visit was not an endorsement of illegal activities but rather an effort to engage miners and reinforce the importance of legal compliance.
